Canada managed to handle the covid-19 pandemic better than most of it allies "particularly including our neighbor," says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
He made the comments Wednesday as the US was grappling with a surge in the number of infections and deaths caused by the coronavirus.
"We were able to control the virus better than many of our allies, particularly including our neighbor," Trudeau said.
The administration US President Donald Trump has come under unprecedented criticism over its poor response to the fast-growing pandemic.
"But we still have to be very careful," added the Canadian premier. "Things can change quickly ... we still have some hot spots in some parts of the country, including in long-term care facilities and agricultural work settings, so as we continue to gradually reopen the economy, we have to remain vigilant."
The US and Canada close their border to nonessential travel in March agreed in an effort to contain the outbreak.
Trudeau said that he speaks "reasonably regularly" with Trump amid the pandemic.
The alarming surge in cases in the United States has raised concerns about the increased risk of spread of the virus as the Trump administration tried to reopen the country.
